THE EDIT // Choosing An Engagement Ring
You have found the love or your life (high five!), and you want to make things official. Maybe you don't know where to start, maybe you are overwhelmed by all the information online about finding the right engagement ring, let alone finding a style & design of engagement ring she will love. Never fear we have our top ten tips for choosing an engagement ring!
1. WHAT IS HER STYLE & RING SIZE?
Modern, classic, vintage, unique, there are so many different styles of engagement rings to choose from. Start taking note of the jewellery she wears on a daily basis. Is it yellow, white or rose gold, silver or platinum? Is it highly decorative, antique in style or minimal & modern? Also, don't forget to check her ring size. There a few ways to find this out - take one of her rings and trace the internal side of the ring onto a piece of paper or print off a ring size guide and see what size her ring corresponds with.
If you are still stumped, contact her bestie - she will have some ideas!
2. KNOW YOUR TIME FRAME
You have decided a propose - yay! But keep in mind you might not be able to get down on bended knee straight away. Keep in mind some rings can take weeks to be made especially if it is custom made.
3. PICK A SHAPE
4. LEARN THE FOUR C'S
If you are going to choose a diamond engagement ring, you need to become a little bit of an expert about diamonds. Don't worry, we have a crash course in the 4 C's!
The cut of a Diamond is the most important of the 4 C's. A high quality cut diamond will have angles and finishes which maximise the amount of light if reflects through the top of the diamond, in effect creating the 'sparkle' or brilliance. The cut of a diamond is different to the shape of the diamond which describes the outward appearance of the diamond.
Ironically, a diamonds colour grade is based on the diamonds lack of colour. A 'D' colour grade is considered the highest quality as the diamond is colourless. 'E' & F' grade diamonds are considered white diamonds while 'G-J' grade diamonds are near colourless.
Clarity of a diamond refers to the size, number & positioning of the natural imperfections inside the diamond. Diamond with more imperfections or blemishes will have less sparkle & the degree of imperfections affects the clarity & price.
Flawless (FL) & Internally Flawless (IF) are diamonds that have no visible blemished under 10x magnification.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 & VVS2) are the next stage of clarity, with only minute imperfections which are difficult to locate under 10x magnification.
Very Slightly Included (VS1 & VS2) refers to the clarity of a diamond which contains minute imperfections that are relatively difficult to locate under 10x magnification
Slightly Included (SI1 & SI2) indicates that the diamond contains a noticeable imperfections under 10x magnification
Included (I1 & I2) are the lowest level of clarity with diamonds than contain imperfections that are visible to the naked eye. This clarity level may also effect the brilliance & transparency.
5. KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Besides a house, apartment or car, buying an engagement ring is a massive financial investment. We recommend you work out an idea of your budget before you start looking. Once you start looking the price of the ring will depend on the style as well as the 4'C's we talked about above so there is where you can juggle your budget to get the perfect ring without breaking the bank!
6. FIND THE RIGHT JEWELLER
There are a tonne of jewellery options to choose from, but the common theme is do your research & read reviews to make sure you work with a reputable jeweller. If you are purchasing a diamond ring, you will also want to make sure you receive diamond certification. This report details the 4C's of your diamond and is important for future appraisals & insurance (but more on that later).
7. MAKE IT PERSONAL
Choosing something with sentimental value or a personal touch will make the engagement ring you choose even more special. You could engrave the band, pick her favourite stone, use a family heirloom, or rework a family heirloom into something that transcends tradition and modern.
If you are spending a decent amount on an engagement ring, it is a safety net that you should insure it. Ask your jeweller for a recommendation or have a look online but be careful to check the fine print especially in regards to travelling abroad with the ring (honeymoon right!)
9. ASKING PERMISSION
You may think that in this day an age the original reason for asking a fathers permission for his daughter's hand in marriage, but it all comes down to respect!
