TELL US YOUR LOVE STORY
HOW DID YOU MEET?
It sounds totally cliché, but I honestly believe that Andre and I were souls destined to find each other. He is a kind, generous (and ridiculously patriotic) South African guy who arrived in Australia at the age of 17 barely speaking a word of English. For everything that he has achieved, I am in complete awe of him. We met through mutual friends who cheekily knew we would hit it off. They brought him to a dinner party at my house one night and he was the most gorgeous, well-mannered and considerate man that I had ever met. He asked me out a few days later and, it’s safe to say, from that moment we never looked back. I fell in love with Andre’s kindness, his infectious smile and his enthusiasm for life. Together we have one adventure after another.
HOW DID HE PUT A RING ON IT?
André was quite cheeky! About a week before he proposed, he called me one day and told me he wanted to enter a small raffle at work where the prize was a flight on a Sydney Sea Plane. He asked me whether I’d be up for it (knowing full well that I hate to fly) but, not thinking for a second we’d actually win, I said sure! A few days later, he told me that a friend of his had won the raffle but was giving it to us as it was a few days out from Andre’s 30th. So, we board the plane early on this grey Saturday morning – I remember it exactly, the 21st November 2015 – and we are flying over Palm Beach. He had painted a huge sign saying, “Will You Marry Me?” and had a good friend guard the fort on the beach. Unfortunately for us both, in my reluctance to look down, I didn’t see the sign, so André removed my headphones, whispered in my ear, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Of course, I said yes!!
WHERE DID YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
I wanted the space to feel elegant and intimate. It had a somewhat ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ feel. I wanted candles, an abundance of flowers and lots of great South African wine! I pretty much went to the best in the business and trusted them to work their magic. Heike from Fleur le Cordeur absolutely blew me away. She is an absolute talent and so much fun to work with. She worked all through the night to create a masterpiece for us, and the result was more amazing than we could have imagined.
WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING THEME & STYLE?
We were in the spectacular South African wine region of Stellenbosch, so Andre and I really wanted to work with the natural beauty of our surroundings. Our wedding theme was classic with understated elegance. We took our loved ones on a journey through one of the most wondrous places in the world and this experience was truly a dream come true for us. They say that your wedding day should be the best day of your life, but this experience was even more than that. It was out of this world.
WHAT MADE THE WEDDING PERSONAL TO YOU?
Without hesitation – our people. We both come from extremely close-knit families. His in South Africa, and mine here in Sydney. For both of us, we knew it wouldn’t be a wedding without our families there to celebrate. That was our number one priority. We knew that so few of André’s family would be able to attend if we held the wedding in Australia, so for us, the decision to bring our international guests to South Africa was a relatively easy one.
WHAT WERE YOU MOST NERVOUS OR EXCITED ABOUT?
I wasn’t nervous at all. All I wanted to do was walk down the aisle and see Andre smiling at me. Oh, and then tuck into our cake ;)
DID YOU DIY ANY ELEMENTS?
Actually no. I had this kick ass wedding planner who had it all under control.
NOW, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART - THE DRESS!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DRESS
Ohhhh I love my dress!! I knew it was the one from the very first moment. It was the first wedding dress I ever tried on. It was so elegant and had this real sense of 1920s glamour. I was in awe of the delicate lace neckline and open back with that exquisite beading – it was a real work of art.
WHO WAS THE DESIGNER?
Inbal Dror – what a goddess.
WHERE WERE YOUR BRIDESMAID DRESSES FROM?
This was actually the part of the wedding I was most concerned about. I wanted something classic, elegant and simple. My sister and I were actually shopping at Scanlan Theodore when we threw together the couture strapless top and bonded lace skirt in white, and we were blown away. We were like… this is it. This is everything. Then we teamed it with the Knot Front Heeled Sandals in ecru.
WHERE WERE THE GROOM & GROOMSMEN SUITS FROM?
All the men were decked out in Hugo Boss.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM YOUR DAY?
It’s a tie between the look on my dad’s face when he saw me in my wedding gown for the first time, and the look on Andre’s face when I walked down the aisle. Two completely different emotions, with two of the most important men in my life.
WHAT DOES MARRIAGE MEAN TO YOU?
It’s saying to the world, “I choose you, I will always have your back” and knowing that your dreams and aspirations will be met with unconditional love. It’s finding a part of your soul in another person.
My sister gifted me with these gorgeous diamond studs the morning of the wedding.
My Valentino heels… I bought them in NYC and wore them to our engagement party.
Advice. My mum wrote Andre and I the sweetest marriage advice and gave it to us the morning of the wedding. I will cherish it, learn from it and pass it on.
Mmmm… I might have cheated on this one… can I say Andre’s eyes?
ANY WORDS OF WISDOM YOU CAN PASS ONTO FUTURE BRIDES & GROOMS?
People warned me that things were bound to go wrong, that some little detail wouldn’t quite work out. So, I figured that as long as I had my people, some great South African wine and a rocking DJ, it wouldn’t matter what happened. Turns out, everything went to plan and it was amazing, but at the end of the day, love is all that matters. Oh – and make sure you take a few minutes out to be together on the day – time really does fly when you’re having fun!
