GIRL BOSS // Sarah of Sphere Collective
Location: Sunshine Coast, QLD
Current Title / Company: Founder and Owner of Sphere Collective
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB OUT OF UNIVERSITY & HOW DID YOU LAND THAT POSITION?
I didn’t go to Uni. I had a hairdressing apprenticeship at the age of 15 and worked in the hair and beauty industry for 7 years before moving to Sydney and studying Fashion at the FBI fashion College.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR BUSINESS?
Sounds cliché but my passion and love for fashion and styling. The beauty and fashion industry is something I have always been obsessed with, I was never interested in anything else even as a child. I worked and interned everywhere when I was in Sydney. David Jones, Fashion week, Fashion magazines and in hair salons. I met and worked alongside so many creative and talented people it really inspired me to create my own creative environment.
TAKE US THROUGH A DAY IN THE LIFE OF YOUR BUSINESS
I feel like I’m’ chasing my tail all day every day. But I do love it.
I’m up super early 4am. To get in some me time before work, work out beach coffee. ( I love early morings).
I’m at work by 8am answering emails before I take my first appointment 9am. The day’s appointments vary between bridal appointments and my hair clientele appointments. I don’t really do a lot of hair dressing any more, but I have a small clientele which I have been doing their hair since moving to the Sunshine Coast and I like to keep my hands and eye in the beauty industry, it certainly comes in handy when styling my brides and clients.
My hair studio and bridal studio are right next to each other. So its super handy, I just float between the two for appointments. In between appointments I’m answering emails and prepping gowns and outfits in the studio, researching looks and searching for fashion pieces for clients.
Then I have admin days where I just lock myself in my office all day & glue myself to my emails & admin. I can never seem to keep up with the emails. I read this quote 'adult life is emailing back & forth until one of you dies' - it’s so true!
HAS ANYTHING SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO CREATE YOUR BUSINESS?
It never ends! Haha. The journey never ends! I knew it would be hard and stressful and testing at times but you just keep rolling and working your way through it. You’re always learning, making mistakes, making goals, creating the next idea. It’s a never ending journey.
OBVIOUSLY, YOUR BUSINESS HAS GROWN! SO, LET'S TALK MONEY. TELL US ABOUT THE INTIMIDATING PROCESS OF FINDING FUNDING FOR YOUR BUSINESS.
ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO NEED TO FIND FUNDING FOR THEIR OWN STARTUP?
I worked three jobs to get Sphere Collective going. I have been working 3 jobs for nearly 3 years while planning & setting up. I did my research, made my connections and started small. As exhausting as it was working 3 jobs, it was what kept me going and able to feed everything back into the business to grow. I have only just recently dropped my 3rd job as a receptionist. I felt confident enough I didn’t need the third income to help support me or the business and more importantly Sphere Collective was growing and it needed all my attention.
YOUR BUSINESS HAS DEVELOPED QUITE A FOLLOWING. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS? HOW DID YOU SPREAD THE WORD?
The power of Social Media. That in itself is a full time job, keeping the social media and online presence going is 24/7 but so important. I worked really hard and got together with some amazing creative people that understood my brand and styling and had a similar aesthetic. I wanted strong beautiful images to help spread the word about who and what Sphere Collective was. In that journey itself, I met some really amazing people in the industry through networking and now have a great little team to get creative with.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF YOUR BUSINESS?
Oh gosh so many factors have had to come together for it to be a success.
Firstly, it’s all hard work. Hard work and the stomach to handle a bit of risk. It looks glamourous but its long hours, sleepless nights and a lot of work.
Our brides have made it all the success. I’ve been so lucky to work with so many gorgeous brides and clients that have put their trust in me and have wanted to work with me and my style and embrace what Sphere has to offer. I pride the store on that one on one experience and I am so thankful it’s been well received.
Support and advice from our designers and people in the industry has been amazing and so helpful. I’ve made great friendships and networks with everyone Sphere works alongside and their knowledge, guidance and advice has been such an encouraging strength! Lastly, the success doesn’t come without the help and support I get from my parents and my partner Zane.
My partner Zane, the poor guy has to deal with it all. Haha. He gets the highs the lows the melt downs and everything in between. He is the most encouraging human ever- even when I doubt myself he backs me. He is a builder but I tell you what he knows his way around a Trunk Show weekend!
And when in doubt call your mum haha.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BRIDAL TREND AT THE MOMENT?
That’s hard! I love an interesting fabric, something with beading or texture.
YOUR FAVOURITE WEDDING DRESS CURRENTLY INSTORE?
That’s hard too! Have to be Sadie from Chosen by One Day Bridal. Its stunning, such a chic and classic gown.
BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?
Your knowledge and skill is valuable and important. Back yourself.
I WISH I KNEW HOW TO...
Surf, I’ve got all the gear and but no idea! My partner surfs and I would just love to go out every time with him. I will give it another go this summer.
WHAT IS YOUR COFFEE ORDER?
I have two. At 5am it’s a double shot latte ¾ full. At 9am it’s a bullet coffee.
TV SHOW YOU WISHED WAS STILL ON AIR?
Will & Grace
NEXT TRAVEL DESTINATION?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR 23 YEAR OLD SELF?
Don’t invest your time in people that don’t invest in you. Be brave and go for what you want.
