GIRL BOSS // Rue De Seine
Name: Michele Corty
Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Current Title / Company: Creator / Artistic Director of RUE DE SEINE Bridal
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB OUT OF UNIVERSITY & HOW DID YOU LAND THAT POSITION?
My first job out of University was for a trend forecasting company in Paris. I did all the fashion illustrations and put together style sheets for French fashion brands. How did I get the job? Friendly stalking. I called every day until they hired me.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR BUSINESS?
I had spent 7 years designing ready-to-wear in Paris and loved seeing my creations for the everyday, but after making my own wedding gown, I knew it was the next step in my career. I instantly felt inspired by the fabrics and loved being able to create a gown with more of my own style. The dress was romantic, bold, and I was able to dance all night. I was comfortable, but also felt so special. I want our brides to feel the same way I did that day. I hope that I can bring a more relaxed, yet fashion-forward approach to bridal. Our girls are looking for a gown that fits their own unique style.
TAKE US THROUGH A DAY IN THE LIFE OF YOUR BUSINESS
Marvellous mayhem started by meetings with every division in our office (We have a lot of divisions!) and ending with the design team finally finding some quiet creative time to work on the new range. Fabric is flying, pins are everywhere, and Bowie is blasting of course;)
HAS ANYTHING SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO CREATE YOUR BUSINESS?
Everything. When we started, we had 5 people working out of a tiny studio (That we shared!) and today a team of 60 talented seamstresses, designers, and dreamers make Rue De Seine possible. My life partner and business partner helps me to see the long term vision, which is difficult when focusing on all the craziness of day to day.
I have learned to listen myself, my team, and our clients. We would not be here if we could not learn from our mistakes and keep dreaming.
OBVIOUSLY, YOUR BUSINESS HAS GROWN! SO, LET'S TALK MONEY. TELL US ABOUT THE INTIMIDATING PROCESS OF FINDING FUNDING FOR YOUR BUSINESS.
ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO NEED TO FIND FUNDING FOR THEIR OWN STARTUP?
My partner and I completely funded our own business. It was important to us that we start with what we actually had and only had ourselves to answer too. I worked the craziest jobs to fund Rue De Seine and would do it all again!
YOUR BUSINESS HAS DEVELOPED QUITE A FOLLOWING. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS? HOW DID YOU SPREAD THE WORD?
Any social media where we can connect directly to our followers and clients is the only marketing we invest in. We push ourselves to have relevant editorial content that allows our following to see into our world. Our team works all year round to create photoshoots and find other people and brands to work with. Even after our brides have their gowns, we ensure they are able to find everything else to make their day special.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF YOUR BUSINESS?
A team that truly believes in what we are making and a lot of hard work. Delivering a product that we can be proud of to our stores and brides is everything to us.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST MILESTONE FOR YOU & YOUR BRAND?
Creating nearly all of our own fabrics. Our brides want to be unique and we try to offer them a totally different product, made with high standards, that they can afford.
YOUR FAVOURITE BRIDAL TREND AT THE MOMENT?
Large volumes are making their way back and we could not be more excited. Especially those dreamy voluminous sleeves!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT COLLECTION
The inspiration for WILD HEART always starts with our brides. Their bohemian spirit inspired us to go to exotic places filled with abundant textures, sights, and colours. We wanted to capture the beautiful places our brides have been and the exciting journey ahead.
For our campaign, we travelled to the beautiful landscape of Morocco, where the desert camps and bustling streets of the Medina made the perfect backdrop to our WILD HEART collection.
YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE FROM YOUR CURRENT COLLECTION?
The Nahla Gown makes my heart sing. I love how untraditional she is, but super bohemian and romantic.
