What was your first job out of university and how did you land that position?
Actually, I dropped out of school in year 11 and my first job was as a Dental Nurse.
What inspired you to create your business?
Design has always been a dream of mine. I was 6 months into maternity leave after my first child and I was getting cabin fever so I just went for it.
Take us through a day in the life of your business?
I religiously start my day with coffee. I am up at 5 am going through my emails that have come in overnight, replying to my overseas stockists by 6am so that there some form of timezone connection. Then I go through what is on the schedule for me and for my production staff for the day and make sure that everyone has everything they need in order for it to run smoothly. Then the day is driven by what comes through in terms of emails, calls and logistics.
Has anything surprised you about the journey to creating your business?
Yes, myself! Being a business owner is a rollercoaster. It’s not for the faint hearted and it probably helps if you are a little crazy to start with, otherwise you will end up that anyway :)
Obviously, your business has grown! So, let's talk money. Tell us about the intimidating process of finding funding for your business. Any advice for women who need to find funding for their own startups?
To this point I have not used outside funding for my business. Of course, there was an investment of my own money initially, but growth to this point has been organic. There have been opportunities presented to me that required a large amount of funds that promised huge growth, but I just wasn't prepared to take the gamble. I had faith in my brand and I had faith that good things were going to come in good time, and this conservative approach has fared the business well.
Your business has developed quite a following. Can you tell us a little bit about marketing your business?
How did you spread the word?
I was really lucky with first two capsule collections. They were seen and promoted by some industry bloggers overseas which really gave me the starting board I needed. My brand evolved from what it first was so it has been knowing how to market the evolution while staying true to the brand. I did this by aligning myself with bloggers, creatives and industry people who truly saw what I saw in my brand and helped me present it in the best possible light.
What do you think is the key to the success of your business?
Always be grateful that someone chose your dress to wear on their wedding day. It’s a bloody big deal. I also like to do a bit of a business “health check” every couple of months to see what’s working, what’s not and what could. Lastly, but not least, it’s my team. Without them there is no Marquise Bridal.
Your favourite bridal trend at the moment? Splits, splits and more splits.
Your piece from your current collection?
Currently it’s the Memphis dress. It is just sultry bridal at it’s finest. The thing I love the most about it is that it looks completely different on every bride and brings out their own individual femininity. The new collection is about to drop and my favourite is the Milan.
Best advice you ever received? Own your s**t. Own it, and move on
